Surf and Sand Resort Wedding Guide

Getting Married at Surf & Sand Resort: An Insider Guide from a Laguna Beach Wedding Planner

I've had the privilege of planning weddings at some of the most coveted venues along the California coast — Pelican Hill, Montage, The Ranch — but Surf & Sand Resort holds a category of its own. Perched directly on 500 feet of pristine Laguna Beach, this independent, family-owned resort is the definition of casual coastal luxury. When a couple tells me they want ocean breezes, golden-hour light on the Pacific, and a venue that will impress without feeling stuffy, this is always my first call.

In this guide I'm pulling back the curtain on everything you need to know: ceremony and reception space options, honest pricing and food & beverage minimums, the logistics that matter, and how your guests can make the most of a full weekend in Laguna Beach.

Why Surf & Sand Resort Is in a Class of Its Own

Situated at 55 South Coast Highway in the heart of Laguna Beach, Surf & Sand Resort has the distinction of being built directly on the sand — not near it, not overlooking it, but on it. Every oceanfront room comes with a private balcony and commanding views of the Pacific, and the ceremony terraces are separated from the water by nothing more than a glass railing. As a planner, this matters enormously: when the backdrop is that inherently beautiful, every photograph is effortless.

The design leans Mediterranean beach-luxe — blonde hardwoods, airy hues of sand and cream, coffered ceilings, whitewashed shuttered windows, and original artwork throughout. It's elegant without being formal. Couples who want their wedding to feel like the best version of a Laguna Beach afternoon — sunlit, unhurried, deeply romantic — will find their venue here.

What I appreciate most as a planner is the service culture. This is a boutique, independent resort and it shows. The catering and events team is collaborative, communicative, and genuinely invested in each wedding. That makes my job easier and your day better.

Ceremony & Reception Spaces

Surf & Sand offers a range of ceremony and reception venues to suit everything from an intimate gathering of 30 to a full ballroom celebration for 180. Here's how I think about each space for my couples:

CATALINA TERRACE

Catalina Terrace — Ceremony, Up to 180 Guests

The showstopper. An expansive oceanfront terrace drenched in golden-hour light, with sweeping views of the Pacific and Catalina Island on clear days. The curved glass railing keeps the ocean visible from every seat. This is where couples dream of exchanging their vows. Ceremony site fee: $10,000–$12,000.

PACIFIC TERRACE

Pacific Terrace — Ceremony, Up to 80 Guests

The most intimate outdoor ceremony option — open-air and perched right above the sand. Perfect for couples who want that same oceanfront magic on a more curated guest list. Pairs beautifully with the Beachcomber Ballroom for the reception. Ceremony site fee: $4,000–$6,000.

LAGUNA BALLROOM

Laguna Ballroom — Reception, Up to 180 Guests

The flagship reception space — vaulted ceilings, an elegant foyer with hardwood credenzas and polished marble, and large south-facing windows bathed in California sunshine. An adjacent patio with a partial ocean view is ideal for cocktail hour before guests move inside for dinner and dancing.

BEACHCOMBER BALLROOM

Beachcomber Ballroom — Reception, Up to 80 Guests

Surf & Sand's second-largest indoor space, leading through curved archways onto a sheltered Mediterranean-style patio. Light-filled and characterful — a wonderful pairing with the Pacific Terrace ceremony.

BLUEBIRD BEACH ROOM

Bluebird Beach Room — Ceremony or Reception, Up to 60 Guests

The most intimate option — a full wall of windows makes it the brightest space in the resort, with French doors opening to an idyllic garden patio and a showstopping fountain. Ideal for a micro-wedding or a private dinner reception.

THE BEACH

The Beach — Ceremony on the Sand

Say "I do" with bare sand underfoot and the Pacific as your witness. The resort's direct beach access allows for ceremonies steps from the rolling surf. Truly unmatched for couples who want nothing between them and the ocean. Note: weather-dependent and subject to resort coordination.

My favorite pairing for a full wedding day: Catalina Terrace for the ceremony, cocktail hour on the Pacific Terrace while guests enjoy the sunset, then dinner and dancing in the Laguna Ballroom. The flow is seamless, the views build in drama, and guests spend the entire evening with the ocean in sight.

Venue Costs & Food and Beverage Minimums

I believe informed couples make better decisions and have fewer stressful surprises. Here's an honest breakdown of what it costs to get married at Surf & Sand. Pricing varies by season, day of week, and guest count — always request a current proposal from the resort's catering manager for a precise quote.

Important notes before you plan:

• Ceremony site fees are billed separately and do not count toward your food & beverage minimum.

• All F&B minimums are exclusive of the 26% service charge and applicable sales tax — that service charge is taxable.

• Your event window is six hours total (including ceremony), or until midnight — whichever comes first.

• Overtime extensions are $1,000 per hour, subject to availability, and cannot exceed midnight.

• A non-refundable deposit is required upon signing. A second deposit of 75% of your estimated balance is due 90 days before your event.

• Complimentary tastings are provided for events of 50+ guests (for two people).

• No outside food or beverage is permitted except your wedding cake. Entrée choices are limited to two proteins plus one vegetarian option.

• Valet parking is exclusively offered at the resort: $10 for up to 10 hours, $65 overnight.

Line Item Details Estimated Range
Catalina Terrace ceremony fee Up to 180 guests · oceanfront $10,000–$12,000
Pacific Terrace ceremony fee Up to 80 guests · oceanfront $4,000–$6,000
Food & beverage minimum Per reception space; excl. service charge & tax Contact venue for current figures
Service charge Applied to all food & beverage (taxable) Currently 26%
Overtime extension Subject to availability; not to exceed midnight $1,000 / hour
Valet parking Exclusively offered at the resort $10 (up to 10 hrs) · $65 overnight
Estimated starting investment ~50 guests, off-peak season From ~$46,000+

Ceremony site fees are billed separately and do not apply toward your food & beverage minimum. The 26% service charge is taxable. Pricing varies by season, day of week, and guest count — always request a current proposal from the resort's catering manager.

Peak season runs June through October and commands the highest minimums and site fees. If you have flexibility, a Friday or Sunday wedding — or an off-peak month like March or November — can meaningfully reduce your F&B minimum while giving you the same spectacular venue. I always explore this with my couples before they lock in a date.

Fun Things to Do in Laguna Beach for Your Wedding Guests

One of the great gifts of a Surf & Sand wedding is the location itself. Laguna Beach is one of Southern California's most vibrant and walkable coastal towns — art galleries, restaurants, nature, and water activities are all within a short stroll or drive. Here's what I recommend for guests who want to make a proper weekend trip of it.

ACTIVITIES LIST

Art Galleries & the Laguna Art Museum

Laguna Beach has been an artist colony since the early 1900s. The Laguna Art Museum houses over 3,500 works of California art, and downtown is full of independent galleries worth wandering. If your wedding falls on a First Thursday, the monthly Art Walk — with wine, music, and artist meet-and-greets — is a special bonus for guests.

Kayaking, Snorkeling & Tide Pools

Laguna's coves and reefs are a marine wonderland. Local outfitters like Laguna Ethos offer daily kayak tours and snorkeling excursions. The tide pools at Heisler Park and Crystal Cove are spectacular at low tide and wonderful for guests traveling with children.

Heisler Park & Crescent Bay Point

A cliffside walking path with dramatic Pacific panoramas, lush gardens, and a romantic gazebo. Crescent Bay Point Park is a quieter lookout often frequented by dolphins below — perfect for a morning-after stroll with a coffee in hand.

Victoria Beach & the Pirate Tower

Tucked below a residential neighborhood, Victoria Beach is one of Laguna's most romantic and photogenic coves — famous for its iconic 1920s pirate tower. The perfect golden-hour destination for out-of-town guests on the day before or after the wedding.

Wine Tasting

McClain Cellars and Laguna Canyon Winery both offer intimate boutique tasting experiences — ideal for a rehearsal dinner pre-game or a laid-back afternoon with guests who want to explore beyond the beach.

The AquaTerra Spa at Surf & Sand

A destination in itself. Massages, facials, body scrubs, and nail services — guests can book treatments throughout the wedding weekend. For the morning of the wedding, I recommend reserving a few treatment slots for the bridal party early in the planning process.

Downtown Laguna Village

Forest Avenue and the surrounding streets are a joy to wander — boutiques, surf shops, great coffee, and excellent restaurants. Las Brisas and The Deck on Laguna Beach are perennial favorites for oceanfront dining. Splashes Restaurant inside the resort is also exceptional for a pre-wedding dinner or farewell brunch.

Festival of Arts (Summer Weddings Only)

If your wedding falls between early July and late August, the legendary Festival of Arts — and its famous Pageant of the Masters — is a world-class evening experience just minutes from the resort. Secure tickets well in advance; it sells out every year.

Where Your Guests Should Stay (Besides Surf & Sand)

Surf & Sand's 165 oceanfront rooms make it ideal for an on-site room block — and I always encourage couples to reserve one the moment their contract is signed, because they fill quickly in peak season. For overflow guests, family wanting their own space, or guests with different budget preferences, here are my top picks nearby.

HOTEL LIST

Montage Laguna Beach — Luxury

The ultimate luxury choice on the California coast. Thirty acres on a dramatic bluff with bungalows, villas, and the world-class Spa Montage. Perfect for parents of the couple or guests looking to extend their stay into a full resort experience. Roughly 10 minutes south on PCH.

The Ranch at Laguna Beach — Luxury

A stunning canyon retreat in Laguna Canyon with a scenic golf course, spa, farm-to-table dining, and a completely different vibe from the oceanfront. Lush, secluded, and very Southern California. Ideal for guests who want nature alongside luxury.

La Casa del Camino — Boutique

A beloved historic hotel steps from the gallery district, with a rooftop bar and vintage coastal charm. Walking distance to Surf & Sand and two minutes from the Laguna Gallery of Contemporary Art. Wonderful for art-loving guests.

Casa Laguna Hotel & Spa — Boutique

A gorgeous hillside boutique hotel with lush garden terraces and a Mission Revival aesthetic. The pool and grounds are beautiful for a post-wedding morning brunch gathering. About five minutes from the resort.

Laguna Beach House — Boutique

Guests consistently describe it as visiting a friend's perfectly curated beach cottage — warm, cozy, and walkable to everything. A wonderful option for guests who want proximity to the beach without the full luxury price point.

Pacific Edge Hotel — Best Value

Perched on a cliff above Laguna Beach with genuine ocean views, Pacific Edge delivers excellent value. Diver's Cove is about a block away and Main Beach is two blocks — unbeatable location for the price.

Costa Art Hotel — Best Value

A creative, modern boutique hotel that doubles as a cultural hub with rotating art exhibitions and a pool. Refreshed rooms, friendly staff, and well-located for both the resort and downtown. A great pick for guests who appreciate design.

I recommend setting up your room block at Surf & Sand the moment your contract is signed — that’s the single biggest capacity constraint at this venue. I also give all my couples a custom guest welcome guide with Laguna Beach activity recommendations so out-of-town guests arrive feeling oriented and excited, not scrambling for things to do.
